Q: Oi Sheyan, what do you do?
A: Hey! I’m a Registered Psychologist, Board Approved Supervisor, and the Founder of Ascension Psychology. I made the decision to start Ascension in a 7/11 carpark during one of the COVID lockdowns. I offer therapy, psychological assessments, and supervision for other professionals. I work from our Balwyn North location and by telehealth.
Q: What’s your vibe in therapy?
A: I keep it warm and collaborative. We’ll look at what’s behind certain behaviour patterns and make a gameplan together. I despise psychobabble and will do my best to avoid that. I pull from a bunch of different approaches EMDR, CBT, ACT, and Schema Therapy. I absolutely LOVE the exploratory nature of therapy and find it both a privilege and incredibly exciting to support you on your mental health journey.
Q: What kind of clients do you work with?
A: I work with all clients but, I’m especially passionate about supporting South Asians, Men and Neurodivergent folks (ADHD and Autism) with their mental health also. As a Sri Lankan ADHDer myself, I get how important it is to have a space where you feel truly understood. I also have interests working with first responders, military personal, PTSD, new fathers and autistic burnout.
I am also extremely passionate about assessments for ADHD, Autism, learning difficulties (like dyslexia), Intellectual Disability, Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia and Giftedness.
Q: Do you offer supervision too?
A: Yep! I really enjoy helping other professionals sharpen their skills in therapy and assessments. I’ve had some amazing supervisors over the years and I love giving back to the profession. I am available for primary and secondary supervision for the 5+1 pathway or supervision for early career psychologists, counsellors or social workers.
Q: Can you tell me about some of your past experience?
I’ve worked in private practice, as a school psychologist, and in the disability sector; doing therapy, assessments, social gaming programs and supervision. I also helped out with a large-scale assessment department in a past role. Most of my work has been with neurodivergent men, which is something I’m really passionate about.
Q: What do you get up to when you’re not working?
A: Probably out walking my dog, getting a workout in, or diving into a PlayStation game — right now, I’m fully hooked on Red Dead Redemption 2.
